Now, hair transplant physicians can work with different techniques to uproot and transplant large numbers of hair follicles called follicular units.
There are two main techniques currently in use for hair transplantation. The FUE, Follicular Unit Extraction; and the FUT, Follicular Unit Transplantation techniques.
They vary mainly in the manner hair follicles are uprooted from the donor area.
FUE – Follicular Unit Extraction
In an FUE hair transplant procedure, each follicular unit is independently uprooted from the scalp with no strip of tissue being removed.
Hair follicles are uprooted randomly decreasing hair density in the donor area that many say is hardly observable. This is the major distinction between an FUE and an FUT procedure.
Generally, the hair transplant physician follows these steps to perform an FUT:
- The donor area is marked and anesthetized.
- The custom built micro-removal instrument isolates individual follicular units. Note that the surrounding tissue is unaffected. See figures below.
- Follicular units are removed with utmost care. The donor area will heal within a week. See figure below.
- The recipient area is anesthetized. Then your physician will create small puncture sites to receive the grafts, positioning them in a predetermined pattern and density, and angling the punctures in a uniformed way so the hair pattern will appear realistic. See figure below
- The donor hairs are inserted. See figures below
- The recipient area will heal within a week
FUT - Follicular Unit Transplantation
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is an approach where hair is transplanted from the permanent zone, the region in the back and sides of the scalp where hair is more resistant against balding, to the bald or balding areas of the scalp.
This can be achieved by using naturally occurring clusters of 1, 2, 3, or 4 hairs, called follicular units.
After the patient’s scalp is anesthetized, the physician removes a strip of tissue from the donor area, an area within the permanent zone, and, once extracted, the donor strip is slivered into several independent follicular units by means of microscopic dissection techniques.
As these follicular unit grafts are being readied, the physician makes small incision in the scalp, called recipient sites, where the grafts are placed.
The arrangement and positioning of these follicular unit grafts dictates the aesthetic qualities of a hair transplant, so therefore this arrangement need to be decided on a case-by-case basis, according to the patient’s history of hair loss and probability of future hair loss.
For the simple reason that follicular unit transplants mimic the manner in which hair grows in nature, the results, in a skilled physician's hands, will appear absolutely natural and be indistinguishable from one’s original hair.
What Are Follicular Units?
For a long time it was believed that scalp hair grew as individual strands, yet scalp hair actually grows in tiny little groups of 1-4 hairs each. These groups are called “follicular units.” Interestingly, even after doctors discovered the existence of these groups, they didn’t consider using them in hair transplant procedures.
What Is A Graft Dissection?
One of the crucial aspects of Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation is stereo-microscopic dissection. This enables follicular units to be isolated from the donor strip without becoming split apart and broken up or damaged.
Over the course of a graft dissection, it is important that the entire follicular unit is kept intact, as this will maximize its growth. Intact follicular units will also give the most fullness to the hair restoration, as they carry the total, natural complement of 1-4 hairs.
What Is A Holding Solution?

What Are Recipient Sites?
Recipient sites are the needle slits or holes that the hair transplant surgeon creates in the patient’s scalp, on which the follicular unit grafts are placed during a hair transplant procedure.
At Yanhee International hospital, the recipient sites in most of our hair transplants are created utilizing lateral slits (also called coronal or horizontal slits).
Lateral slits have the benefit of orienting the hair within the follicular unit to match the manner in which it grows in nature. They provide the hair transplant surgeon a very high amount of control over the direction and angle in which the transplanted hairs will ultimately grow.
What Is A Donor Area?
The donor area is the section of the scalp (normally the back and sides) where hair-bearing skin is removed during a surgical hair restoration procedure. For a hair transplant to succeed, the hair in this area must be permanent (not subject to the effects of DHT).
Minimizing the surgical mark from the donor incision is a crucial part of a successful hair transplant procedure. A fine donor scar enables a person to keep his/her hair fairly short after the hair transplant (if one likes to do so) and grows the quantity of hair that can be farmed (removed) in ensuing hair transplant procedures.
Calculating the amount of follicular unit grafts that will be transplanted in a hair transplant is an essential component of planning and designing a hair transplant for the best possible aesthetic effect.
Hair Transplant Risks and Safety Information

As with any surgical procedure, infection may happen. Excessive bleeding and/or wide scars, sometimes called "stretch-back" scars caused by tension may result from some scalp-reduction procedures.
When hair loss progresses after surgery, an unnatural, "patchy" look may result-especially if the newly-placed hair lies next to patches of hair that continue to thin out. If this happens, additional surgery may be required.
